Welcome back to the Indie Builder podcast. Today we're talking about the myth of overnight success.

Speaker 200:05

Thanks for having me, Alex. Yeah, it's something I see all the time on Twitter.

Speaker 100:10

Exactly. People see the $10k MRR screenshot but they don't see the 3 years of building in silence.

Speaker 200:16

Right. It's like an iceberg. The visibility is just the top 10%. The grind, the failed launches, the pivots - that's all underwater.

Speaker 100:25

I love that analogy. So, when you pivoted from your first SaaS, what was the triggering moment? Was it data or just a gut feeling?

Speaker 200:34

It was actually customer feedback. Or lack thereof. We launched, and... crickets. No one cared. That silence was louder than any hate comment.

Speaker 100:42

Wow. "Silence is louder than hate." That's a bar right there.

Speaker 200:46

Haha, yeah. So we realized we were solving a problem nobody had. We were vitamin creators in a world looking for painkillers.

Speaker 100:55

Vitamin vs Painkiller. Classic. So how did you find the painkiller?

Speaker 201:00

We stopped building and started calling. I called 50 potential customers. Not to sell, just to ask 'What is the most annoying part of your day?'

Speaker 101:10

And that led to the pivot?

Speaker 201:12

100%. They all said the same thing: Inventory management. It wasn't sexy, but it was painful. So we built that.

Greeting

Hey Builder,

Hook

We've all seen the overnight success stories on Twitter. But what if I told you that silence is actually better than hate?

Key Takeaways
  • 1The 'Iceberg Theory' of indie hacking explains why you only see the wins.
  • 2Why getting zero feedback is actually the most valuable data point you can get.
  • 3How to pivot from building 'vitamins' (nice to have) to 'painkillers' (must have).

LinkedIn Post

🚀 Overnight success is a myth.

We love to share our wins on here. The $10k MRR. The viral launch. The acquisition.

But we rarely talk about the "underwater" part of the iceberg.

- The failed launches
- The empty inbox
- The pivots that went nowhere

On the latest episode of Indie Builder, we talked about why "Silence is louder than hate".

If you launch and nobody cares, that's the market telling you something crucial: You're building a vitamin, not a painkiller.

Are you solving a bleeding neck problem? Or just a minor annoyance?

Twitter/X Thread

1

1/7 Overnight success is a lie. 🚫 We see the top 10% of the iceberg (the wins) but miss the 90% underwater (the failures).

2

2/7 When you launch and hear crickets, it hurts more than hate comments. Hate means you provoked a reaction. Silence means indifference.

3

3/7 Most failed startups are building 'Vitamins' instead of 'Painkillers'. Vitamins = Nice to have. Painkillers = Must have right now.

4

4/7 If you have to convince someone they have a problem, you've already lost. Find the people who are already looking for a solution.
